The cat’s finally out of the bag now – EA has officially revealed its next entry in the Battlefield franchise.

The project has already drawn the ire of members of the games community – or as we shall henceforth refer to them, pissy manchildren – after the cover featured a woman. Some have said this is historically inaccurate, ignoring the fact that, yes, many women were involved in combat around the globe during the Second World War.

Also keep in mind that the pissy manchildren also threw a hissy fit when Battlefield One featured a black character, one of the Harlem Hellfighters, on its cover, if you want to spot a recurring pattern of behaviour.

The project will also not feature loot boxes. Well, it won’t feature loot boxes that give users an inherent advantage. An EA rep speaking to Kotaku said that all purchasable items in the game will be cosmetic-only. This follows EA saying that it hadn’t given up on the business model after the backlash to Star Wars Battlefront II’s implementation of them.

“Battlefield V is a homecoming for DICE as a studio—a return to the era that came to define the Battlefield franchise. But as nostalgic as we are about World War 2, we wanted to challenge the preconception of the era with an unexpected portrayal of this familiar setting. Our vision with Battlefield V is to let players explore new and untold sides of the conflict that shaped the modern world,” DICE GM Oskar Gabrielson said.

“The scale of each battle and level of immersion is unlike anything we’ve done before in Battlefield and players are in for an epic journey.”

Here is Battlefield V’s reveal trailer:

Dark Souls Remastered brought the 2011 action-adventure classic straight into the No.1 spot in the Steam Top Ten last week.

From Software announced a remaster of Dark Souls on multiple platforms earlier this year. Quickly becoming a phenomenon on its initial release, the remaster is largely small graphical upgrades and quality of life improvements. PC fans are relishing the opportunity to play back through the classic without installing a prerequisite list of mods to get the game running properly.

Dark Souls Remastered is the second game to depose PUBG since its launch in March 2017. Far Cry 5 took the top spot from Battlegrounds on launch last April.

Conan Exiles slips down four places to No. 6 this week, its survival trappings usurped by Raft. Offering aquatic adventures with acquaintances, Raft sails in to take No. 3. Fellow hunger-bar-manager The Forest continues to hold in the top ten, down two spaces at No. 8

House Flipper moves up a spot from last week, sitting strong at No. 4. Developer Empyrean has been consistently updating the game in the week since launch, making renovations before making bold expansion plans. Wizard of Legend takes No. 5, dropping one place from last week.

Distant Stars, a story pack for Stellaris, takes the No. 7 position this week. The $10 pack released last week, and adds a wealth of new exploration content to the Paradox space strategy.

Ubisoft close out the list, with ninth and tenth spots going to Rainbow Six Siege and Assassin’s Creed Origins respectively.

Below is the Steam Top Ten for the week ending May 26th.

The finance community is more then aware of the negative press facing the games market at the moment, but it has not been dissuaded.

That’s according to Liberum MD of investment banking Neil Patel, who says that the recent spate of controversies has not had a deterring effect.

This follows a wave of negative press including the EA Star Wars Battlefront II loot box controversy, Fortnite reportedly being addictive – something developer Epic refutes – and the WHO adding video game addiction to its list of diseases. According to Patel, it helps that the recent wave of companies that have gone public, such as Codemasters, Sumo Digital and Team17, are family friendly and thus less likely to court controversy.

Patel assisted Codemasters and Elite Dangerous maker Frontier Developments with their initial public offerings.

“[The finance community] is conscious of it but they don’t see it as being a threat to humanity,” Patel said.

“They don’t believe that games and the companies they’re investing in have those characteristics. It’s helpful that Frontier, Codemasters and many of the other companies that have IPO’d recently aren’t producing games that are particularly violent. They’re quite friendly for younger audiences. They are relatively family-friendly forms of entertainment, I think. That’s the way the investors think.

“They don’t see them as being in the eye of the storm. They do acknowledge that there’s a mood out there. I sense it’s changing. As games become more social, the stigma of boys sitting in their dark rooms playing games is a bad thing is going: there are more women playing games now than ever and social media and interaction has improved as well.”

Games comms application TeamSpeak has accused Discord and Skype of selling on user data to third parties in the build-up to its big new update this year.

TeamSpeak 5 is set to launch later in 2018 with the company updating its website to talk up the update.

Promised features include “military grade security”, “ultra-low latency” as well as “the best voice quality available”. Additionally, the company says that “Unlike other solutions, we don’t force you to use our centralised servers. We don’t harvest your data, sell it on. We don’t tell you how things should work or look. It’s your choice. We let you decide.”

In the competition analysis table on the company’s homepage, TeamSpeak calls out both Discord and Skype of “providing” data to third-parties. Speaking to PCGamesN, a Discord spokesperson refuted this accusation, saying: “Discord does not share data with any third parties.”

TeamSpeak is likely bitter as it has been dethroned from its position as the top dog of the games chat space. Discord has burst onto the scene, accumulating 130m users in just a few years becoming the defacto games comms application. To be fair to TeamSpeak, Discord hasn’t been afraid of slamming its offering, either.

Steam has recently overhauled its chat client with a series of features that resemble Discord’s offering.

TeamSpeak 5 takes over from… TeamSpeak 3 and is set to launch at some point this year.

Ukie

June 21st, 2018 – 10:05am
By Alex Calvin, Editor – PC Games Insider

UK video games trade body Ukie has announced an industry-wide consultation to see how the region’s industry can grow in a post-Brexit world.

Announced at yesterday’s Westminister Summer Reception, the endeavour will see the organisation speaking with games companies from across the UK and seeking insight as to what the sector needs from Government to continue its growth.

This follows 2015’s Blueprint for Growth report and State of Play from 2016.

“We have been extremely active in presenting all the evidence-based policy recommendations to Government possible over the last two years and look forward to clarity and certainty in the next few months from Government regarding how we do global, friction free business after we leave the EU,” Ukie chief Dr Jo Twist OBE (pictured) said.

“This consultation is a necessary step to achieve a united and strong voice for and by the industry in all its diversity. As the fifth largest games market in the world, and globally respected for our creativity and innovation, we need to keep pace as the industry continues to grow globally.

“Last year’s State of Play EU report showed that 61 per cent of games businesses in the UK rely on international talent and although the industry plays a strong role in helping to shape the homegrown skills we need, it is the diversity of perspectives and experience, as a global industry, that will drive our innovation, creativity and success. So, we need clarity on what new immigration system will be in place very soon in order to offer companies confidence.”

Margot James MP, the Minister of State for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport added: “The UK games industry is at the heart of our creative industries, combining arts and culture with science and technology and delivering compelling interactive experiences to a global audience. The Government is committed to supporting this sector, through initiatives such as the Video Games Tax Relief, the UK Games fund and we now look forward to further developing this partnership as we deliver the Creative Industries Sector Deal.”

Portalarium

By Natalie Clayton, Staff Writer

Shroud of the Avatar developer Portalarium has announced layoffs as the team scales down.

Founded by old-school RPG veteran Richard Garriott, the Texas-based studio was responsible for creating Shroud of the Avatar – billed as the developer’s return to vast narrative roleplaying adventures.

“Now that we are almost complete fulfilling our Kickstarter promises, we are adjusting our team size to better match our current monthly revenue,” said executive producer Starr Long on the game’s forum. “This will give us the balance we need to begin work on Episode 2 while ensuring we can support the online service. To do that means having, at least for now, a smaller team.”

The studio’s smaller team will be focussed on maintaining and improving existing content, before starting work on the next phase of the MMOs development.

“Right now we will shift our focus from creating new content to polishing our existing systems. This means making a stronger new user experience, fixing bugs, reworking the quest system, performance improvements, user interface polish, and more.”

Discord

June 22nd, 2018 – 11:13am
By Alex Calvin, Editor – PC Games Insider

The latest change to Discord is a section that shows what users’ friends are playing.

The Games tab lets consumers see what their friends are playing, see updates about the titles they are playing as well as being recommended games to try out.

Some pictures to illustrate these changes are below.

Discord launches Steam-like Games tab

This feature bears a striking resemblance to Steam’s social features – ironic given that Valve recently updated the platform’s chat features and everyone said it looked like Discord. Huh.

Discord launched three years ago and has managed to gather a massive 130m users in that time.

Speaking to PCGamesInsider.biz earlier this year, CEO Jason Citron said that Discord actually solving problems for users was part of its success, and that was driving word-of-mouth marketing.

This is the latest big feature that Discord has introduced, following Rich Presence in November 2017, Spotify integration in February of this year along with verified servers.

Around $2m of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive items have been lost after Valve shut down trading bots used by OPSkins.

That’s according to users on the r/GlobalOffensiveTrade – as spotted by PCGamesN – who have compiled a list of bots that have been banned, along with an estimate for how much value they were each holding.

The current count is 2,843 trading bots who were responsible for 1.5m items worth a massive $2m.

These bots were shut down on June 21st and follows a cease and desist order from Valve to OPSkins at the start of June. Said C&D appears to have been issued via Twitter which, um, seems unusual.

All of this comes in the wake of OPSkins launching the Express Trade service. This free enterprise allows users to get around the current seven-day hold on trading CS:GO items which was launched in March.

OPSkins has reassured users that it is not going to be shutting down and that their money is safe. In a statement on its blog, the company said that this was an attempt by Valve to maximise sales on its own Steam Community Marketplace, and went on to highlight its burgenoning blockchain business – World Asset Exchange (WAX) – as well as highlighting the pros of its service.
